5 Facts about Memorial Day

American FlagMany Americans will gather with family and friends each year for Memorial Day, most enjoying a 3 day weekend. What do you really know about this holiday?

1. It was first observed on May 30, 1868. The holiday used to have a fixed date of May 30, regardless of which day the holiday fell on. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be observed on the last Monday of the month.

2. Tradition dictates that the American flag should be lowered to half-staff from dawn until noon on Memorial Day.

3. The holiday was first called Decoration Day as the intent was for people to decorate the graves of their loved ones who had died in the Civil War.

4. Beginning in the late 1950's, a tradition began to place small American flags at the head of each gravestone in Arlington National Cemetery on the Thursday before Memorial Day. The cemetery is guarded throughout the weekend to ensure that the flags stay in place.

5. Memorial Day weekend is known as the unofficial start to summer in addition to the start of launching summer blockbuster hits. Movies such as Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Hangover Part II, and Men in Black III were all released Memorial Day weekend.
